Pink Floyd - Animals

Animals is a concept album by English rock band Pink Floyd, released on January 23, 1977 in the UK and on February 2 in the U.S.. The album proved a success in America, reaching #3 on the Billboard album charts. However, it was on the American charts for only six months even though it has continued to sell solidly, to the extent of its having gone quadruple platinum, according to the RIAA.
This is one of the best albums of pink floyd ever, along with Dark Side of The Moon and Wish You Where Here, and Roger Waters almost made this album alone.David Gilmore only co-wrote one track, the epic, the epic song ''Dogs" that was originally called "You Gotta Be Crazy". The song "Sheep" started as "Raving and Drooling". This was the first Pink Floyd album without a composition from keyboard player Rick Wright.
Each song on the album reflects on Water's beliefs about the class system found in capitalistic societies, with the pigs being a metaphor for the owners of large corporations (upper class), the dogs being the ruthless men who run the corporations (middle class), and the sheep being the working class, the lowliest rung on the class ladder

The's some commentaries I found in wikipedia and let me put here:

It wasn't a great, one of the most productive periods of our life I don't think. We used those two tracks, which went back to '74 and changed the names and doctored them around and stuff and stuck them on the album. I like them, I love that album. It's exciting and noisy and fun and it's got really good bits of effects and stuff on it but it's not one of our creative high points really.

- David Gilmour, May, 1992, Pink Floyd: The 25th Anniversary Special, Westwood One.

I didn't really like much of the album. I have to say I didn't fight very hard and to put my stuff on and I didn't have anything to put on. I played on it. I think I played really well but I didn't contribute to the writing on it and also I think Roger was kind of not letting me do that. I think was the start of the whole ego thing in the band, Animals.

– Rick Wright, November 1994, BBC Omnibus Pink Floyd Special 1994.

Songwriting credits can be deceiving... especially in Pink Floyd after the WYWH album.

Animals essentially contains 3 long suites (dogs, pigs, sheep) and 1 'straightforward' song, split in 2 short parts (pigs on the wing)

With the exception of pigs on the wing, which was Roger's piece entirely (written for his then wife, Carolyne), the rest has so much Gilmour in it that it's practically his baby. Nevermind who wrote the lyrics and the basic chord structures. Gilmour's compositions are a major part of the record (music for 'dogs', at least half the music of 'sheep') but possibly the most important aspect are arrangements and performance. Aside from his trademark guitars, bass duties were also handled mostly by Gilmour (including the fretless on Pigs). During the 11+ minutes of Pigs, there are more than 16 tracks (multiple lead & rhythm guitar parts & textures, bass, heil-box) that are single-handedly Gilmour's.

Do you want to imagine what this album would sound like, if it was kept at the shape of Roger's demo versions (acoustic guitar & vocals)?

And Rick's fluid synth, organ, piano, clavinet and fender rhodes playing is the carpet that holds it all together.

I don't really care what Dave & Rick had to say, in hindsight, about the album, "Animals" wouldn't have been what it is without them.

Keep up the good work with your reviews.
